Abstract
This article studied novels published in technical literary magazines which have been issued since 2000, having ‘chosunjok’ as their subject matter and attempted to deal with the aspects, authors’ spirit, and issues of prospects of those novels through the concept of ‘distance’ between ‘us’ and ‘others’. To the speaker ‘I’ in the novel <Maybe it was Late Summer>written by Lee Eung Joon, Shenyang in China is only a place for escape and where she harshly faces her wound. In Kim Yeon-su’s novel <Unable to Shoot Hirobumi>, too, the space Harbin and ‘chosunjok’ lives play an additional role. The two novels, however, imply social discrimination that ‘chosunjok’ have been going through and show the issue of marriage between ‘chosunjok’ and Koreans, which is a way of realizing Korean dream, so this represents the authors are aware of the social problem which raises conflict within ‘chosunjok’ society. Kim In-suk’s novel <The Sea and the Butterfly> is the one in which the reality of 'chosunjok' in China and their difficulties in relation to Korea are more profoundly described. The story of a ‘chosunjok’ family is not a story about others we feel unknown distance for but becomes a story of ‘us’ based on empathy. In Jeong Do-sang’s works <A Wild Rose> and <Soso, Becomes a Snowman>dealing with the issue of North Korean defectors, ‘chosunjok’ and China appear, but the main characters of the novels are North Korean defectors and the theme is their reality. As seen above, in Korean modern literary works, ‘chosunjok’ have not been dealt with as a central theme or object for novels yet in terms of their subjective aspect or awareness of present issues.
