Abstract
A. Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades" is an exemplary work of the fantastic which can be defined as a hesitation between the marvellous (=supernatural) and the uncanny(=natural). The aim of this paper is to show that the plot and characters of "The Queen of Spades" reflect the theme of the hesitation and repeat the transition from one to the other, that is, from reality to fantasy and vice versa. The hero of the story, Germann who received only a little capital from his father had to achieve independence and peace for himself. There were two ways for him to accomplish his aim, one is German's way(the-name-of-father) and the other is Germain's(the desire of the mother). Being inspired by Tomsky's anecdote about three secret cards Germann who had been dreamed of making a fortune at one stroke chose the Germain's way and caused the Countess to death. Though he got the secret from the ghost of Countess, he lost all the money at the final gambling table by choosing a wrong card(queen of spades) instead of ace and went mad. Unlike Germann who showed the fate of transition from realty to fantasy as an adult-child with furious imagination, Lizaveta survived him thanks to her ability to know reality from fantasy. And the third one, Tomsky was a playful guy who could make a serious joke out of fun. Both had a sense of balance between reality and fantasy, which instead of luck was indeed necessary for Germann to be an adult and to face his life with chance, or to play the real game.
