Abstract

Jang, So-jin, 2007, The Meaning of ‘House’ and the Status of the Patriarch in Modern Novels, URIMALGEUL: The Korean Language and Literature 39, pp.399～426. This paper, paying attention to the fact that man, who has enjoyed his power as a patriarch under the capitalistic system, paradoxically faced the problems of alienation and crisis, discusses such problems through the symbolic object, ‘House.’ Thus with Jo Seonjak's ‘High Tension Wire,’ and Ho Yeongsong's ‘House in a Flow’ I have investigated patriarchs’ agony for providing a secure living spaces to their families, and the non human reality. With Lee Dongha's ‘Loud Laughter’, and Choi Inho's ‘Others' Room,’ I have examined the problem with the house that is signified as a scene of a patriarch’s alienation and crisis. And with Park Wan seo's ‘Story of a Trivial Man,’ and Lee Mun yeol's ‘Snail's Going Out,’ I have tried to find out the meaning of house as an original world of the male existence and the responsibility as a patriarch.
