This paper aims to clarify a view of life and death in Tolstoy’s several novels(「Tri smerti」, 『Master and Man』, 『The Death of Ivan Il’ich』, 「Father Sergius」), comparing Tolstoy's philosophy with Lao tzu’s and Zhuang zi’s. In this paper we examine several key concepts of Taoism and try to find them in Tolstoy’s novels. According to Zhuang zi, death is not the end of all things and we should accept death and life equally. But Lao tzu pursuits not death, but long life. In consideration of these views, we could find heroine’s negative attitude to death and Fyodor’s and tree’s positive attitudes in 「Tri smerti」. On top of that, Ivan Il’ich, Vasil’ and Father Sergius reflected their previous lives and changed their viewpoint of life before death. In conclusion, Tolstoy used the moment of death to change characters’ viewpoints not only through his experience of overcoming the fear of death, but also Taoism.
Abstract
