Abstract
This article examines the works of Russian symbolist group the Blue Rose. The Blue Rose, influenced by French symbolism, sought an enduring and free system of symbols in their work. The main botanical symbols of the Blue Roses are not only real plants such as roses, willows, acacias, mimosas, nymphaeas, tuberoses, mirabilises, etc., but also mysterious fairy-tale plants. The fusion of real botanical forms with abstract symbolic ones found in easel painting, graphics, and majolica mosaic painting by the Blue Roses(Goluborozovs), visualizes a fantastical and timeless Arcadia. Like the French symbolist group Nabi, the Blue Roses gained the opportunity to synthesize diverse mediums such as painting, architecture, sculpture, and decorative art through active participation in constructing the Crimean estate of Novy Kuchuk-Koi. They envisioned their artistic ideal embodied within this architectural complex, manifested by botanical symbols. The premature dissolution of the Blue Roses is explained by the overthrowal of the symbolist worldview. As their artistic aspirations for the eternal and evasive heavenly mystery were proven unattainable, the artists turned to expressing negative, insignificant, worldly emotions like anxiety, fear, and confusion. The Blue Rose, once the object of divine fantasy, was now an impossible dream. Their heavenly paradise of symbolic plants was encroached upon by hellish symbols of fear, nightmares, and loss. The possibility of complex interpretations of the world through symbolic systems decimated, the Blue Rose inevitably withered away.
