Abstract

- The relative sensitivity of two freshwater non-biting midges, Chironomus yoshi-matsuiMartin and Sublette and C. ripariusMeigan, was examined for lead, cadmium, and mer-cury in water-only exposures. Two endpoints were compared to assess toxicity 48h and 96h afterexposure: Acute toxicity (50% lethal concentration: LC50) and behavioral toxicity (50% effectiveconcentration: EC50). For the behavioral toxicity, reduction of swimming performance of twomidge species in the treated conditions was compared to that in the untreated control. TheLC50 values in C. yoshimatsuito cadmium and lead were always higher than those in C. ripariuswith increasing toxicity, regardless of the exposure times. The opposit was true for the mercurytreatment. Similar trends were observed in the EC50 values. The EC50 values were always lowerthan the LC50 These results indicate that the two midge species respond to the heavy metals differently: C.ripariusis sensive to cadmium and lead and C. yoshimatsuito mercury. Behavioral toxicity suchas swimming performance can be an effective endpoint for assessing heavy metal toxicity inwater.
