초록

BACKGROUND: Water quality of rural areas are susceptibleto agricultural nutrient input and supply such as chemicalfertilizer and livestock manure. This study was conductedto evaluate the usefulness of nutrient (N and P) indices inunderstanding spatial variations of water quality acrossChonnam province which is a typical agricultural region inKorea. METHODS AND RESULTS: The nutrient indicesincluding chemical fertilizer supply, livestock manureproduction, and nutrient balance were correlated with waterquality data (T-N, T-P, BOD, and COD) for the twenty-twodistricts of the province. Concentration of T-N werepositively correlated with chemical fertilizer supply, livestockmanure N production, and nutrient balance (P<0.05 orP<0.01). Meanwhile, T-P concentration was not correlatedwith these nutrient indices; however, there was a tendencythat T-P concentration increases with livestock manure Pproduction (P=0.06) and with nutrient balance (P=0.09). These results suggest that T-N concentration is susceptibleto both chemical fertilizer and livestock manure; whereasT-P is likely to be affected by livestock manure rather thanchemical fertilizer. The concentrations of BOD and CODwere also positively (P<0.05 or P<0.01) correlated withlivestock manure production. CONCLUSION: This study shows the usefulness ofnutrient indices in understanding spatial variations of waterquality and suggests that livestock manure rather thanchemical fertilizer can be a more critical water pollutionsource and thus highlights the need for more attention tolivestock manure treatments for rural water qualitymanagement.
