초록

BACKGROUND: Contamination of source water byodorous compounds are one of the problems related to thewater quality management, especially in Korea wheresurface water is used as drinking water. Geosmin (1,10-trans-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol) and 2-MIB (2-methylisoborneol : 1,2,7,7-tetramethyl-exo-bicycloheptan-2-ol)are commonly recognized earthy-musty odor compoundsproduced by algae causing serious problems to the drinkingwater purification facilities. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, spatial andtemporal distribution of the odor compounds, geosmin and2-MIB were investigated along with the development ofphytoplankton in the Daechung reservoir from July 2012 toOctober 2013. CONCLUSION: Concentrations and frequencys ofdetection of both compounds increased from April toOctober which were related to cyanobacterial bloomperiods. However, concentrations of odor compounds werenot related to the number of cyanobacteria. Concentrationsof both cyanobacteria and geosmin showed similar trendswith depth. Pearson correlation analyses showed thatgeosmin concentration exhibited significant correlationwith the count of Anabaena macrospora and Aphanizomenonflos-aquae. On the other hand, 2-MIB concentrationshowed a significant correlation with the count ofAnabaena smithii.
