Abstract
This study investigates how statistical thinking (ST) and critical thinking (CT) interact during real problem-solving situations relevant to statistical citizenship. Drawing on qualitative analyses of university students’ responses to hybrid tasks designed to elicit both ST and CT, the study identifies several interaction patterns. When CT dispositions such as source skepticism did not lead to examining statistical grounds—such as sample size or representativeness—CT tended to hinder ST by prompting unwarranted dismissal of statistical evidence. In contrast, when core statistical concepts were sufficiently understood, ST provided a cognitive structure that enabled CT to generate more justified and reasoned judgments. Students with limited transfer of ST often reduced statistical information to simple possibility statements, undermining the basis on which CT could operate. Although some participants recognized graphical distortions, this awareness rarely extended to evaluating the legitimacy of policy conclusions. Overall, ST and CT interact in ways that can either reinforce, impede, or disconnect from each other depending on learners’ knowledge, dispositions, and task context. These findings highlight the need for instructional design that intentionally supports the integrated functioning of ST and CT in fostering statistically responsible citizenship.
