Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of empathic ability and rumination in the preliminary program for suicide-risk prevention based on the German and Russian literary works targeting university students. This preliminary program is based on the readings of German and Russian literary works which were used to form the basic framework of the suicide-risk prevention program. This program divided university undergraduate students into two groups selecting 16 undergraduates to participate in the preliminary program and 32 undergraduates in a non-participating group. Measurement tools in this study included the empathic ability scale and the rumination scale. To prove effectiveness, an F-test analysis of applying SPSS was used. The findings are as follows. First, compared to the nonparticipation group, the participation group in the preliminary program using the German literature appeared to express higher levels of empathic ability. Second, in comparison to the nonparticipation group, the participation group in the preliminary program using the German literature indicated lower levels of intrusive rumination and higher levels of deliberate rumination. Third, compared to the nonparticipation group, the participation group in the preliminary program using the Russian literature was seen to represent higher levels of empathic ability. Fourth, in comparison to the nonparticipation group, the participation group in the preliminary program using the Russian literature appeared to reflect lower levels of intrusive rumination and higher levels of deliberate rumination. This study implemented the reading & writing program based on literary works, thereby inferring that the program’s use of high-quality classical literature may have a positive influence upon empathic ability and rumination in university students. Finally, some discussions and suggestions were attached aiming at the application of follow-up research and programs related to suicide prevention.
