Abstract
In order to acknowledge duty to believe there are two questions to be answered. First, under which conditions do we have duty to believe a certain proposition? Second, what kind of duty is this? We shall examine three different views on these questions: Clifford’s view, James’s view, and Pascal’s view. Also I shall show that this is by no means an exhaustive list of possible views. After analyzing the case of conspiracy theories I shall present and defend the view which states that we have the epistemic duty to believe the proposition P to the degree that P is possibly true. Finally, I shall examine and reject Wrenn’s view that there are no epistemic duties and Nelson’s view that epistemic duties are only negative.
