이 논문의 목적은, 외연주의의 입장에 서 있는 콰인(W. V. Quine)의 철학이 내포적 문맥들이 불러일으키는 문제를 얼마나 잘 다룰 수 있는가를 살펴보려는 데에 있다. 콰인은 여러 내포적 문맥들 중 명제적 태도 문맥과 양상 문맥이 제기하는 문제에 대해 서로 다른 전략을 취함으로써 자신의 외연주의를 고수하려고 한다. 즉 그는 명제적 태도 문맥에 대해서는 인용부호 구문으로 간주하는 외연적 분석을 제시함으로써 외연주의 언어 내에 포용하려고 하고, 양상 문맥에 대해서는 이론적 불필요성을 논변함으로써 양상 개념을 이론적 언어의 영역에서 추방하려고 한다. 이 논문은 종국적으로는 이러한 콰인의 두 전략이 서로 충돌하게 된다는 것을 보인다. 즉 명제적 태도 문맥에 대한 콰인의 인용부호 방식의 분석은 믿음 귀속에 있어 특정한 언어를 언급해야 하고, 그 특정 언어와 관련을 갖지 않는 주체에게 믿음을 귀속하기 위해서는 양상적 개념이 요구된다는 것을 보인다.
Abstract
Can Quine's extensionalistic philosophy cope with the problem of intensional contexts? Quine attempts to defend his extensionalism through two different strategies with respect to two important intensional contexts: modal contexts and propositional attitude contexts. He proposes an extensionalistic analysis of propositional attitude contexts, while he tries to expel modal contexts from theoretical languages. In this paper, I argue that his two strategies conflict with each other. Ironically, Quine's own quotation analysis of propositional attitude contexts shows the essentiality of modal contexts in our theoretical languages.
