Abstract
This paper examines the individual exam results of College Scholastic Ability Test and National-level Achievement Test as the outcome of personal attributes and regional contexts using expansion method of regressing analysis. Expansion method allows to disclose the mediating role of the regional contexts on the effects of personal attributes to the outcomes. For the College Scholastic Ability Test, large cities show higher scores than those of other regions, but they modify the role of personal attributes, especially for the graduated students having higher scores in rural regions contrary to the average. For the National-level Achievement Test, large cities show lower scores than those of the other regions, but the regional effects are not so great in modifying the effects of personal attributes on exam results. The mediating role of regional contexts on the effects of personal attributes allows us to understand the regional variation of exam results along with personal effects in detail, and such understanding helps to find a way to improve the regionally specific learning environments.
