Abstract
This article discusses the relevance of the Holocaust, modernity, and postmodernity in the light of responsibility. If the Holocaust was no transitory regression to a pre-modern barbarity within a modernist project, it was fundamentally rooted in the Western civilization. I will explore what causes makes the tragedy possible and how reason falls into instrumental rationality, which has come to both determine and explain foundational relationship between the Holocaust and modernity. On the other hand, I will explore Lyotard's assertion of the Holocaust as “dilemma” by placing it within what is the dilemma of traditional philosophy per se. It means that the tragic happening has neither tools nor the methods necessary to confront the experience of Auschwitz. In this contrast between modernist's and postmodernist's interpretations, I will propose Emmanuel Levinas's ethic of the Other by asserting that the harmony with politics and ethics will construct the responsible ethic either falling into the end of reason or the escape of ethical nihilism.
