Abstract (Purpose) This study explored the factors impacting the social anxiety of residents in Daegu Metropolitan City. (Design/methodology/approach) We conducted a survey of residents over 18 years old in Daegu Metropolitan City and performed hierarchical multiple regression analysis using core variables such as economic factors, media use behavior, and perceptions of political and social conflict. (Findings) The study demonstrated that the factors affecting social anxiety have a multidimensional structure, including social demographics, evaluation of the economy, media use behavior, and perceptions of political and social conflict. Social anxiety was higher among females than males and was influenced by retrospective economic evaluation. Social anxiety was also higher among individuals who used conservative and liberal news media and online communities, evaluated congressional, governmental, and party responsiveness more negatively, experienced more severe affective polarization, and had lower levels of social trust. (Research implications or Originality) These findings have important policy and academic implications for alleviating social anxiety among local residents and promoting social integration in Korean society, particularly in the context of the intensified unipolar system centered on the Seoul metropolitan area.
