Abstract

In the Samguk yusa or "Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms"written by a Koryŏ Buddhist monk Ilyŏn(1206-1289) in 1281, there is a story on a girl servant, Ukmyŏn. The story entitled "Ukmyŏn,the Girl Servant who Entered the Lotus Paradise" describes the process that the girl, a devout and committed Buddhist worshipper, attained a religious awakening thereby entering the Lotus Paradise. "Entering the Lotus Paradise," here refers both to having died and to having become a Buddha. The "Ukmyŏn story" is composed of 4 parts: (a) the citation of the Hyangjŏn or "Local records," the first version of this story (b)the citation of the Sŭngjŏn or "Tales of Monks," another version of the story (c) Ilyŏn's remarks on the two records, and (d) a hepta-syllabic quatrain composed by Ilyŏn to praise Ukmyŏn's religious achievements. According to the Hyangjŏn (a), Ukmyŏn's story is summarized as follows: a girl servant Ukmyŏn prayed to Amitabha(Amita Buddha) devoutly with wholehearted faith for a long time, thereby being transformed into Buddha's body and entering the Lotus Paradise. Similarly the records of the Sŭngjŏn (b) can be condensed as follows: a man who had practiced under the lead of P'aljin, an incarnation of Buddha, was reborn as a cow due to his violating the Buddhist commandments and after the cow had died it was reborn as a human being--a female--by virtue of the power of the Buddhist sutras which the cow had carried on its back, and the girl entered the Lotus Paradise. Comparing the two versions of the "Ukmyŏn story," the Hyangjŏn and the Sŭngjŏn, this article intends to read the story from two viewpoints, both of which are based on feminist perspective: one is to consider this story as a description of the embodiment of androgynous attribute inherent in the girl Ukmyŏn,and the other is to read it as a male-oriented narrative written with a discriminatory viewpoint against woman's religious achievement. The former is to read the story as a literary text excluding sociocultural and religious contexts of the time and the latter is to read it relating to the contexts.
