초록

The anticipatory phase in the process of eating involves important neurophysiological and cognitive processes that prepare for swallowing. Various sensory stimuli, such as visual, auditory, olfactory, and proprioceptive inputs, facilitate saliva secretion, prepare the digestive system, enhance food awareness, and trigger the swallowing reflexes. This review emphasizes the importance of the anticipatory phase in swallowing and discusses how various sensory stimuli influence it from neurophysiological, cognitive-behavioral, and hormonal perspectives. A comprehensive analysis of existing studies has confirmed that multiple sensory stimuli play an essential role in promoting swallowing reflexes and improving the swallowing function, especially when applied in the context of daily eating activities. In conclusion, an approach focusing on various sensory stimuli and swallow behavior therapy during the anticipatory phase is needed. This approach is expected to enhance swallowing efficiency in the oral and pharyngeal phases.
