Abstract

In this study I analyze the use of mental illness terminology, such as depression, psychosis, and schizophrenia, in articles from Rodong Sinmun published between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2023. I also examine social perceptions and changes regarding mental illness during the Kim Jong-un era. In North Korea, depression has historically been characterized as a problem associated with capitalism and used as a disparaging term. However, since 2019, there has been an increasing trend in reporting depression as a medical condition and a focus for prevention efforts. The terms “psychosis” and “schizophrenia” have primarily been used to condemn and disparage the hostile country or its leaders; notably, such metaphors have not been used since 2021. North Korea’s prejudice against mental illness, viewed as a negative social phenomenon reflecting capitalist issues, appears to have gradually shifted—at least in part—toward recognizing mental illness as a biological and medical concern. This study suggests the need for ongoing monitoring of how mental illness terminology evolves in response to political and social contexts, and calls for sustained international attention and response.
