Abstract

This study examined the location and history of Cheongdam(淸潭), which was the vacation home (Byeoleop) and a scenic spot in Bukhansan Mountain during the last Joseon Dynasty and explored the actual view of Cheongdam reproduced in documents and Sino-Korean poetry written by writers during the late Joseon Dynasty to identify the value and meaning of Cheongdam as the vacation home and literature writing space during the late Joseon Dynasty. Cheongdam is well known as the pen name of Junghwan Lee(1690~1756) who wrote people's geogr aphy book of the late Joseon Dynasty, Taekriji(擇里志). Also, although it's not well known yet, Cheongdam was the best scenic spot in Bukhansan Mountain and there were numerous travel books and Sino-Korean poems related to sightseeing of Bukhansan Mountain by writers during the late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, Cheongdam was the garden and vacation home of Dokrakjae Sikyung Gu(1637~1699) who was the writer of Uam Siyeol Song(1607~1689) and Sueun Seokbo Hong(1672∼1729) and Songhan Hong(1701~1769) who became the new owner after Gu. Cheongdam was also a place where renowned scholars and poets traveling Bukhansan Mountain visited. Especially, Seokbo Hong built Waunru at Cheongdam and it was handed down to his descendants as the vacation home of Poongsan Hong family. First of all, Cheongdam was the place of studying and writing club for Sikyung Gu who arranged vacation home and became an owner and for Seokbo Hong and Samghan Hong. While Cheongdam was arranged as a private place for reading and studying while enjoying the surrounding views, it was also a cultural space for holding a writing club and enjoying with others. Cheongdam was the place for holding the writing club of prominent poets including Samyeon Changheup Kim and Sacheon Byeongyeon Lee, Yuha Saetae Hong, and Wanam Raekyo Jeong who belonged to Samyeon and Nongam groups. Cheongdam was also a cultural space and art space where leading painters such as Gyeomjae Jeongsun and Bulyeomjae Heesung Kim often visited. Furthermore, Cheongdam was considered as the best scenic spot of Bukhansan Mountain by the writers during the late Joseon Dynasty. Also, Cheongdam was the literature writing space covered by numerous travel books and Sino-Korean poems. After Siyeol Song and Changheup Kim wrote Sino-Korean poems at Seosanjeongsaand Waunru, Cheongdam was spotlighted as the must-visit place for writers of Samyeon and Nongam groups and the succeeding generations during the late Joseon Dynasty. These writers wrote their sentiments in travel books and poems. For them, Cheongdam and Waunru were not only the scenic spot of Bukhansan Mountain but also a symbolic space. Although Cheongdam is not well known until now, considering the owner who ran a vacation home at Cheongdam, positions of renowned scholars at that time, and historical meaning and symbolic meaning of Cheongdam, Cheongdam holds huge value and significance as the vacation home, literature writing space, and cultural place during the last Joseon dynasty.
