Abstract

The Study of the Admonitions and Mottos Written by Leegawon Hur, Kweon-Su* Leegawon(1917～2000) was a great scholar in Korean classics in Chinese characters, Korean classical literature and Chinese classical literature. Also he was a great writer who can compose traditional poetry and prose in Chinese characters. The prose composed by him could inherit ten great writers in Korea dynasty and Chosun dynasty whose prose could be representative of our nation. Leegawon had distinguished composition ability, therefore he composed 6 piece of admonitions and 279 piece mottos. He was the writter who composed most much admonitions and mottos. There was no rivals in not only our country but also China from ancient to the present day. Originally, it was the traditional rule that the style of admonition and motto incorporated the message of encouragement and precept. But Leegawon expanded the range of its application, because admonitions and mottos written by him included contents of cultivating oneself and other's moral character, the spirit of the salvation of the world, calligraphy, oriental painting, the curio, the writing materials, utensils of daily use. Leegawon began to compose admonitions and mottos from twenty two years old, from his fifty had composed them very much. He usually had composed set-form verse which used four characters in one phrase. On rare occasions, he composed free verses. By using constricted diverse languages, he expressed profundities. He swept away stereotyped format of admonitions and mottos till then and opened up new way. So his works were multifarious in both contents and forms.
