Abstract

This article examines perspectives on the Pacific War, and visions of the future presented in Japanese history textbooks for middle school and high school levels, looking in particular at the teacher's edition produced by right-wing Japanese historians. The textbooks are characteristically duplicitous in four narrative tendencies. First, right-wing textbooks praise or deny Japan's war of aggression while ignoring the suffering of the colonial subject and focusing only on their own. Second, they praise patriotic martyrdom while distorting the suffering under Japanese aggression and ignoring the autonomous anti-war and national liberation campaigns of colonial subjects. Third, they touch only cursorily upon controversial topics involving border nations such as China and Korea while boldly declaring their own political position in the guidebooks for teachers and professors in order to influence student opinion. These views are presented in the student textbooks in the same manner if not even more strongly. Fourth, rather than giving voice to present day issues that are related to past events, these voices are marginalized and as a result create more suffering for those who have been silenced. Ultimately, in the process of providing historical education, right-wing textbooks manufacture reasons to wage war with other countries and are nothing more than right-wing political texts for cultivating a citizenry to rule over these nations. Of course, not all Japanese history textbooks are exclusionary like this. There are history textbooks that highlight the suffering of other Asians and listen to their voices. These textbooks focus on coexistence with other Asian nations and stress the universal value of all people.
