Abstract
The City-god temple(ch‘enghuang miao 城隍廟) in China, located in Chou-hsiench‘eng(州縣城), had a close ties with chiso(the provincial administrative office, 治所). It was called sŏnghwang(city-god) temple in the early Chosun. However, spatial changes of the chiso in during late Goryeo to early Chosun led some of early Chosun city-god temples to be linked to earlier chiso while others were tied to contemporary chiso. In other words, the former city-god temples persisted through late Goryeo and early Chosun even after they were established while the latter were ones that were built after the chiso were relocated. Since pre-Chosun chiso were located in chiso-sŏng(治所城) which were placed in mountain, the first city-god temples were also either located within mountain fortresses(sansŏng, 山城) or on mountains where fortresses were nearby. In contrast, contemporary chiso were located in fields resulting in latter city-god temples to be located in fields as well.
