Abstract
Heogun(許筠) was a famous writer of the mid-Choson dynasty who had traveled as a diplomat to China's Ming dynasty three times throughout his life. He also had been visited Beijing from April of 1614, the sixth year of Gwanghaegun(光海君), to January of the following year as the head ambassador. However, the existing collected works of Heogun omit any mention of his diplomatic activities and The Annals of the Choson Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄) have a cursory mention of this. Only in the Jocheonrok(朝天錄), written by Kim Jungcheong(金中淸), the official scribe (書狀官) of these diplomatic visits, can we find many records of Heogun's diplomatic activities. Though scholars have known about the references to Heogun in the Jocheonrok, there has been no specialized analysis that utilizes these documents up to now. Building on earlier research that has adopted Kim Jungcheong's negative portrayal of Heogun, this study looks closely at Heogun's literary activities using these sources. Heogun left behind many examples of his literary work, of which one poem is recorded in the Jocheonrok. On his diplomatic trip he took with him his own and his family's written works and when he was in the company of famous literary figures in China, he actively introduced them to his own work and his younger sister's literary collection, the Lanseolheonjip(蘭雪軒集). In particular, it is recorded in the Jocheonrok that Baiyu(白瑜), a renowned scholar of the Ming dynasty wrote a preface for the Lanseolhoenjip, although this fact cannot be found elsewhere. He obtained many Chinese books from Beijing, a number of which contained inaccuracies about the Choson dynasty and which played a significant role in the collection of inaccurate writings and books between these two countries.
