초록
Compared with modern queer drama, boys’ love stories in the Chinese market find fertile soil in the genre of Xianxia, which features ancient settings and the cultivation of immortality. To figure out how boys’ love Xianxia drama plays with the state censorship and satisfies the audience, this research observes one of the most successful dramas The Untamed adapted from the popular webnovel Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Meanwhile, to investigate how the audience reacts to the drama’s strategies in dealing with homosexual content, the author digs into the first-hand audiences’ comments in a Chinese scoring platform Douban to avoid falling into line with subjective audience conjectures. This paper argues that drama producer justifies boys’ love narratives by incorporating it into the broader cultural norms propagated by the government, and the audience forms a united front with the drama producers in their decoding of the drama content to concertedly challenge the national hegemony.
