Abstract
The postmortem changes may vary depending on the environment where body was exposed. So it is crucial to understand the surrounding environment of the body in estimation of postmortem interval(PMI). In relation to PMI estimation of the cold case of Jeju Provincial police agency in 2009, this study aimed to analyze quantitatively the relationship between rectal and ambient temperature by animal experiments regarding special circumstances that the victim was found inside the drainage canal and the weather conditions of Jeju in February. The estimated time of death was verified based on postmortem changes such as degree of rigor mortis and organ decomposition after autopsy, and objective facts for PMI estimation were presented. In particular, comparing the time of inflection point of drainage canal, skin, and rectal temperature, when the temperature inside the drainage canal increased to its highest, it increased to its highest after an hour for skin temperature and 5 hours for rectal temperature. In addition, it has been found that when the temperature inside the drainage canal decreased to its lowest, the skin temperature decreased to its lowest after 2 hours and rectal temperature after 4 hours.
