Abstract

Individuals who have neurological defects or brain damage show extreme behavioral problems, especially violent crime. To understand criminals’ mental abnormality, traditional perspective has been based on psychological and psychiatric background. However, recent neuro-biological knowledge leads to new direction for correctional treatments. Crimes, such as child abuse, family violence, sex crime, drug abuse, juvenile deliquence, are the principal area needing therapeutic jurisprudence. Neuro-biological research focusing biological factors and antisocial behaviors, report criminal outcomes of brain abnormality and endocrine abnormality. Major findings of brain abnormality come from pre-frontal lobe, amygdala, and limbic system. Criminal’s major endocrine abnomality have been reported on testosterone, cortisol, serotonin, and dopamin. As a prominent finding on human aggression, Triple Imbalance Hypothesis explains the reciprocal relationship among three endocrine imbalance, testosterone, cortisol, and serotonin. Nevertheless, the neurological findings about the causes of delinquence and violent crimes now is on starting point. Future correctional psychological studies have to intereste on not only overt behavioral effect but also latent physio-psychological mechanism under the behavioral changes through therapeutic treatment.
