Abstract
In fire incidents, fingerprints can be contaminated by soot from smoke, requiring the removal of soot before fingerprint development. Various methods, including ultrasonic cleaning, silicone rubber casting, tape removal, and brushing, are used to remove soot, which is highly hydrophobic due to its pure carbon (C) composition. However, each method has advantages and disadvantages depending on the condition of the adhered soot. This study considered fingerprint samples deposited on the glass surfaces of bottles or cups, where the temperature effect on fingerprints was minimal. The study examined the effective removal of soot using a stirring washing method and the retention of fatty acids, a component of fingerprints. After removing soot at a stirring speed of 750 rpm for 1 minute and 5 minutes, fingerprint development using Small Particle Reagent (SPR) was found to be effective. In particular, the reaction was observed to be more pronounced in slightly acidic and neutral aqueous solutions compared to slightly basic solutions. The amount of highly hydrophobic fatty acids detached from the glass surface after 1 minute of stirring at 750 rpm was detected as 4.0 µg (2.2%) in slightly acidic solution, 4.8 µg (3.2%) in neutral solution, and 8.1 µg (4.5%) in slightly basic solution. These results suggest that the physical contrast between soot (hydrophobic) and aqueous solution (polar), along with the pH-dependent stirring washing method, makes soot removal highly effective. Consequently, the use of SPR for latent fingerprint development is expected to be a highly useful technique.
