Abstract
This study examined the efficiency of the electrostatic transfer method used as a post-treatment to improve the phenomenon of overdevelopment caused by various powders when developing of latent fingerprints on natural and artificial leather surfaces. As a result, when three types of powders (white magnetic, green fluorescent, and silver gray) were used individually on artificial leather, minutiae could be identified. However, on natural leather, identification of minutiae was impossible due to overdevelopment. Among the auxiliary films used for electrostatic transfer to remove overdeveloped powder (copper plate, aluminum (Al) foil, and cellophane film) the cellophane film, which has the lowest electrical conductivity and the highest electrostatic property, was the most effective. In this case, it was confirmed that the visualization efficiency increased by 13-93% when the electrostatic voltage was applied for 5-10 seconds at 7.51-10 kV, repeated five times. This result is explained by the influence of affinity dependent on the magnitude of the electrically inverse relationship (electrical conductivity and electrostatic property) occurring among the components of the leather surface, powder, and electrostatic transfer auxiliary film. Therefore, it was confirmed that the use of the electrostatic transfer method, employing cellophane film with the highest electrostatic property as an auxiliary film, is effective for removing overdeveloped powder from natural leather.
