순환론적 관점으로 바라본 동시대 서부영화의 미학적 경향

장르가 무성영화 초창기부터 고전 할리우드 시기를 거쳐 오늘날에 이르기 까지 영화사에서 일관되게 중요한 위상을 가졌다는 사실은 새삼스레 언급할 필요가 없을 것이다. 이 연구는 이와 같은 장르의 힘에 주목하여, 그 중에서 도 가장 큰 영향력과 이에 비례한 연구 성과가 축적된 서부영화의 최근 경향 을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 통해 국지적인 특징을 가진 서부극이라 는 장르가 어떻게 시·공의 한계를 넘어 21세기에도 여전히 유효할 수 있는지 해당 장르의 생존 전략을 살펴본다. 본고에서 주요 분석 대상으로 다루는 동 시대 서부영화들은 고전주의 서부극의 요소를 적절하게 계승하고, 초서부극 처럼 적합하게 ‘흥밋거리’를 추가 혹은 재배치해 장르의 존재를 정당화한다 고 볼 수 있다. 이처럼 오늘날 제작되는 많은 서부영화는 야만과 폭력의 역 사를 증언하는 서부영화 고유의 특성을 자기반영적으로 탐색하면서 자신을 잉태했던 근원으로 눈길을 돌린다. 그러므로 이 영화들은 서부극에 대한 메 타 서부극이라고 할 수 있다. 서부극은 태그 갤러거(Tag Gallagher)의 주장대 로 시대적 상황, 관객과 제작자의 태도, 산업적 요구, 감독의 성향이 상호작 용하면서 순환한다. 서부극이 21세기에 다시금 활발하게 제작되는 동인은 이 러한 순환이 어떤 장르보다 원활하기 때문이다. “최첨단은 언제나 중세를 반 복한다.”라고 주장했던 에코(Umberto Eco)를 떠올린다면, 새롭고도 기묘하게 보이는 21세기의 ‘새로운 서부극’들이 왜 순환에 의거하는지 그리고 그 기원 이 어디인지 우리는 능히 짐작할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
It is hardly necessary to mention that genre has been a consistently important part of film history, from the early days of silent film, through the classic Hollywood era, to the present. This study aims to recognize the power of this genre and examine recent trends in Westerns, one of the most influential and proportionally studied genres. In doing so, it explores the genre’s survival strategies to see how a genre with such localized characteristics can transcend the limits of poetry and cinema and remain relevant in the 21st century. Contemporary Westerns are the main focus of this paper, which can be seen to justify the existence of the genre by appropriating elements of classical Westerns and adding or rearranging ‘excitement’ as appropriate to the genre. Many of today’s Westerns are self-reflexive explorations of the genre’s inherent qualities as a testament to a history of barbarism and violence, turning their attention to the sources that gave birth to them. They are therefore, meta-westerns about Westerns, and as Tagg Gallagher has argued, westerns circulate rather than evolve as a result of the interplay between the times, audience and producer attitudes, industrial demands, and directorial inclinations. It is this cycle, more than any other genre, that is driving the resurgence of Westerns in the 21st century. If we recall Umberto Eco’s wry observation that “the cutting edge always repeats the Middle Ages,” we can see why the seemingly new and strange 21st-century New Westerns rely on cycles and where its origins lie.
