Abstract

The objective of this study was analyzing research trends in 426 academic dissertations published in The Korean Association of Police Science Review during the period from 1999 to 2014 (Vol. 16, No. 1). Different from previous studies mainly based on frequency analysis by connecting content analysis and the semantic network analysis method, this study approached from a more quantitative and objective view by examining connection and centrality among studies. The results of this study were summarized largely into five points as follows. First, the volume of research on police science expanded rapidly during the period from 2007 to 2014 compared to the period from 1999 to 2006. Second, a large portion of dissertations published in The Korean Association of Police Science Review were evaluative research. Since 2007, however, the number of relational studies utilizing various statistical methods has increased gradually. Third, from the aspect of research methodology, literature review occupied the largest part, but from 2007 research using positive analysis began to increase markedly. Fourth, with regard to research area, the number of dissertations about police science was largest, which were followed by those about criminology, private security, jurisprudence, correction, and fire science. Lastly, according to the results of analyzing the centrality of research keywords using the semantic network analysis method, ① during the period from 1999 to 2002, with keyword ‘police’ at the center, keywords such as ‘Korea’, ‘crime’ and ‘analysis’ showed high degree centrality, and keywords including ‘analysis of current state’, ‘foreign country’, ‘improvement plans’, ‘coping measure’, ‘problem’, ‘development plan’, ‘self-administration police system’, and ‘introduction’ showed relatively high degree centrality. ② During the period from 2003 to 2006, with keyword ‘police’ at the center, keywords such as ‘Korea’, ‘problem’, and ‘investigation’ showed high degree centrality, and in particular, keywords such as ‘discussion’, ‘improvement plans’, ‘system’, ‘self-administration police system’, ‘police organization’, ‘effect’, ‘coping measures’, ‘job satisfaction’, and ‘factor’ showed relatively high degree centrality. ③ During the period from 2007 to 2010, with keyword ‘police’ at the center, keywords such as ‘plan’, ‘crime’, and ‘analysis’ showed high degree centrality, and in particular, keywords such as ‘police officer’, ‘perception’, ‘effect’, ‘factor’, ‘damage’, ‘education and training’, ‘organization’, ‘relation’, ‘CPTED’, ‘fear’, and ‘sex crime’ showed relatively high degree centrality. ④ During the period from 2011 to 2014, with keyword ‘police’ at the center, keywords such as ‘plan’, ‘analysis’, and ‘crime’ showed high degree centrality, and in particular, keywords such as ‘police officer’, ‘effect’, ‘relation’, ‘organization’, ‘trust’, ‘perception’, ‘job satisfaction’, ‘private investigation’, ‘introduction’, ‘private security’, ‘marine police’, and ‘determinant’ showed relatively high degree centrality.
