This study aimed to enhance pre-service teachers' understanding of scientific models by developing RcBr genetics learning program based on the CMP framework modeling. The program was intended to apply to pre-service teachers to determine changes in their understanding of genetics concept, scientific models, and modeling. For this purpose, a total of 11 sessions of genetics learning program were developed using a model plant Rapid- cycling Brassica rapa(RcBr), which included molecular biology and breeding experiments. Instead of using simulations in the CMP framework modeling, the developed program engaged 13 pre-service teachers as subjects to make models using texts and illustrations, to design experiments to validate their models, and revise or refine their models based on experimental results. To assess the developed program's effectiveness, genetics concept test, word association test, surveys on perception of models and modeling were conducted before and after its application, and the application effect was also analyzed through model composition performance analyses. This study indicated that the developed program had some positive effects on the understanding of genetics concepts, as evidenced by richer concept networks on the word association test. There was also significant improvement in the understanding of the model definition, purposes, and variability, as well as enhanced model-building skills. This suggests that the developed program could provide effective teaching and learning scenarios for students to develop and use models in the future school settings.
