Abstract
The number of school-aged students who discontinued their studies in 2023 was 54,615, accounting for 1.1% of the total school-aged population. This figure has been continuously increasing over the past three years, emerging as a significant social issue. Among the various causes of school dropout, school maladjustment has been identified as a major contributing factor. Thus, this study categorizes family factors—which have been identified in previous research as having a negative impact on school adjustment— into positive parenting attitudes, parental neglect, parental abuse, and the quality of family relationships. The study aims to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between family factors and school adjustment and, based on the findings, derive policy implications that can support adolescents' school adjustment. For this purpose, data from the 2021 National Adolescent Mental Health Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute in Korea were utilized in alignment with the study objectives. The analysis results indicate that all subcategories of family factors had a statistically significant impact on school adjustment (peer relationships). Additionally, self-esteem had a strong positive (+) effect on school adjustment (peer relationships), suggesting that higher self-esteem in adolescents is associated with better school adjustment. Positive parenting attitudes and the quality of family relationships served as key mediating pathways through which self-esteem influenced school adjustment (peer relationships). Parental neglect had a direct negative (-) effect on school adjustment, rather than operating through self-esteem. Parental abuse exhibited a direct positive (+) effect on school adjustment; however, when mediated by self-esteem, its impact turned negative (-).
