Abstract
The financial burden on shipping companies to replace with eco-fuel propulsion ships from existing ships to cope with IMO’s regulations for decarbonization. This study analyzed the effects of exogenous cost reduction on shipping companies and externality when the Emission Control Route (ECR) newly designed as political tool targeting maritime industry is introduced for the liner shipping network between Korea and Japan as case study. The results estimated that there would be a bunkering cost reduction effect of up to 7,225k USD~19,372k USDwith an external cost reduction of 158,101k USD~244,747k USD. In other words, the ECR could be considered a potential political tool that can create balanced effects in economic, social, and environmental aspects, and it suggests that a virtuous policy mechanism that reflects the current status of the shipping industry could be designed until the project to build a green shipping corridor is completed and fundamental decarbonization is achieved.
