Abstract
This study considers China's Yantai Port—characterized by a mismatch between its large absolute cargo volume(top 10 globally) and its regional status(a mid-tier port adjacent to the mega-hub Qingdao Port)—as a ‘relatively mid-tier port'. It attempts to empirically analyze the survival drivers of mid-tier ports in the era dominated by mega-ports through a 4-stage analysis: HHI(industrial concentration)→LQ(specialization)→OLS-A(macro drivers)→OLS-B(micro drivers). The results showed: First, although Yantai's HHI was higher than comparative regions, the gap narrowed over time, indicating the ‘Selection and Concentration' strategy was not observed. Second, Yantai's ‘Wholesale and Retail Trade' sector was identified as ‘highly specialized'(LQ≥1.25). Third, macroeconomic analysis found GRDP(secondary industry) and total trade volume insignificant, identifying only FDI as a significant driver. Fourth, industrial analysis confirmed ‘Production (Manufacturing)' and ‘Transaction(Wholesale & Retail Trade)' as significant drivers, while ‘Transportation(Transport, Storage & Post)' was found insignificant. This research contributes by attempting an empirical analysis of a mid-tier port's survival mechanism using an integrated 4-stage framework, comprehensively examining structural, specialization, macro, and micro factors.
