Abstract

This study evaluates whether incorporating technical indicators into machine learning models improves weekly forecasts of the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) at one- and five-week horizons. Using weekly average BDI data, we estimate univariate and multivariate specifications of long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, Prophet, Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), and a convolutional neural network–bidirectional LSTM (CNN–BiLSTM) model. Multivariate models that integrate technical indicators deliver significantly lower forecast errors and higher directional accuracy than their univariate counterparts. In particular, the multivariate Prophet model achieves mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) below 5% for both horizons, and generalization gap analysis indicates limited overfitting and stable out-of-sample performance. The study contributes to the BDI forecasting literature by providing systematic evidence on the usefulness of technical indicators, an aspect that has received limited attention to date. It also proposes a weekly forecasting framework aligned with practical decision-making cycles in dry bulk shipping and related investment markets, in contrast to prevailing daily one-step-ahead forecasts.
