중년 여성의 이혼 후 재혼 노모에 대한 용서 연구

초록

본 연구는 부모의 이혼과 재혼을 경험한 기혼의 중년 딸이 자신의 성장기에 이혼하고 재혼했던 노모에 대한 용서에 관한 탐색적인 연구로 연구의 목적은 과거 부모의 이혼과 재혼을 경험한 자녀인 중년 여성이 이혼과 재혼했던 노모에 대해 어떻게 용서하게 되었는지 혹은 어떠한 이유에서 용서하지 못하는지 그리고 그 결과는 무엇인지에 대하여 사례연구를 통해 파악해봄으로써 이혼과 재혼을 경험한 중․노년기 가족을 돕기 위한 교육과 상담에 유용한 정보를 제공하고자 한다. 연구를 위해 아동기에 부모의 이혼과 부모 양쪽 모두의 재혼을 경험하였으며 이혼하고 재혼했던 현재 노모가 생존해있는 두 명의 50대 중년 여성을 연구참여자로 하여 심층면접을 실시하였다. 주요 연구결과로 노모를 용서하게 된 연구참여자의 경우 용서의 동기는 ‘모와 똑같이 경험한 남편의 외도’, ‘자식은 버리지 않았음을 알게 한 봉사’, ‘공부를 통한 통찰과 왜곡의 해소’, ‘모를 먼저 사랑해야 한다는 신앙심’을 들 수 있다. 용서의 결과는 ‘모의 재발견과 수용’, ‘모에 대한 측은지심’, ‘정신적인 회복’, ‘신체적 증상(무기력, 우울증)의 완화’, ‘뒤에서 콩알거리지 않는 솔직하고 편안한 대화’, ‘모를 계속 돌보겠다는 결심’ ‘용서했어도 조금은 남아있는 분노’로 요약된다. 반면 노모를 용서하지 못하는 연구참여자의 경우 모를 용서하지 못하는 이유는 ‘평생 차별, 필요시에만 딸을 찾는 모의 이중성’ ‘사과와 감사 표현을 받아보지 못한 억울함’ ‘가장 힘들었을 때 위로받지 못한 기억’ 때문이었는데 이는 모에 대한 깊은 원망심과 분노로 요약할 수 있다. 용서하지 못한 연구참여자인 중년 여성의 용서하지 않은 결과는 ‘어쩔 수 없이 마음을 내려놓음’, ‘정서적, 물리적 단절로 연락하지 않음’, ‘모녀지간에 다가가지 못하는 아쉬움’, ‘자식의 도리로 하는 최소한의 경제적 지원’으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과로 볼 때 이혼하고 재혼했던 노모에 대해 중년의 딸은 개별적인 가족상황과 노모와의 관계에 따라 용서를 하기도 하지만 혹은 끝까지 용서하지 못하는 경우가 있을 수 있다. 그러므로 이들을 대상으로 한 용서 관련 교육이나 상담이 활성화될 필요가 있으며 이들을 위한 개입시 무조건적으로 용서를 목적으로 하기 보다는 중년기 자녀의 각각의 상황과 요구에 맞는 교육과 상담적 접근이 필요하다고 할 수 있다.

Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the forgiveness of mothers by middle-aged daughters dealing with the issue of divorce and remarriage. Methods: The researchers interviewed two women in their fifties who were living with their elderly mothers. The data were analyzed through open coding. Results: The following were the participants’ motives of forgiving their mothers: a) the same experience as mother: husband's affair, b) it was a voluntary activity, and c) study on counseling. The results of forgiveness were a) rediscovery and acceptance of mother, b) compassion for mother, c) recovery in mind, d) easing of physical symptom, e) open communication with mother, and f) remaining angry. The participants’ motives for not forgiving were a) anger and resentment from “son vs. daughter discrimination,” b) mother’s selfishness, c) anger toward mother without apology, and d) mother's coldness during a troubled time. The results of not forgiving were: a) a clear mind, b) emotional and physical cutoff, c) regret regarding lack of intimacy with mother, and d) minimum support for mother. Conclusions: Through this study, the forgiveness of daughters depended on the unique family situation and the dynamics of the mother-daughter relationship. The unique family situation along with the intention of forgiveness must be considered in family counseling and intervention.
