Abstract

This study studied the bamboo pieces (竹编) elements that appear in furniture design. By analyzing the patterns, techniques, characteristics of bamboo pyeon craft, and the needs of furniture design, we aim to suggest points of correspondence between bamboo pyeon and furni- ture design. In order to overcome the limitations of design development using bamboo pieces, we would like to propose a new design by combining it with modern design concepts such as practicality, color, and new materials. Bamboo pieces can be used not only two-dimensionally but also three-dimensionally. Through case analysis, space design was examined using two-di- mensional use on the surfaces of furniture such as chairs, desks, and folding screens, and three-dimensional use using bamboo pieces. In addition, bamboo pieces have the advantage of being eco-friendly and sustainable, showing a unique artistic aesthetic. Lastly, by predicting the future development trend of bamboo furniture and suggesting innovation and sustain- able development strategies, we aim to provide practice and thinking for the application of bamboo knit elements in the furniture field. This study also expects that bamboo craft will be applied more broadly in furniture design and will help promote an organic combination of sustainable development and cultural transmission.
