초록

During both the golden age of Ming Dynasty in China, especially the period of Emperor Wanli, and the revival period of culture and art in Britain, there was a considerable change in the cultural and social development, which shows a great influence on changes in male appearances. Regarding hairstyles and beard styles of 16th century Chinese and British men, some useful information and articles were found in ancient literature and historical novels. Moreover several modern papers and publications have provided some background information on the male’s hair and beard style. Research has shown some differences in portraits of people in history. Because each writer has different and subjective views, the images of historical figures in the work have changed a little. In Chapter 2, I focus on historical backgrounds of Chinese and British male hairstyles and beard styles. Based on the social backgrounds and cultural backgrounds, the male's clothing style, hairstyle and beard styles were closely relevant to their social class. As a result, naturally, the hairstyles and beard styles of British men have changed. In Chapter 3, I compared the representative social classes of China and Britain in the 16th century, which are the royal family, the nobility, the literary family, and the commoner. Also, I compared the characters from nowadays’ history-based films and the actual figures. The method I used in this comparison historical documents, portraits, and descriptions in historical novels, and get a real figure. At last, based on the analysis, only the part of hair and beard of historical figures are published in the thesis. From this paper, the social and cultural backgrounds, and how people thought of the beauty of men back then could be seen. Therefore, the hair and beard style of the period were made to make the work as similar to the original figure as possible. Through the study of hair styles and beard styles of Chinese and British men in the 16th century, I would like the readers to have a chance to know about men's style in this period and their representative features.
