Abstract

Due to the government’s quarantine measures in response to the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020, the Korean Protestant Church suddenly and fully implemented non-face-to-face Services, including online Service. This study is about Non-face-to-face Service as a great change in Christian Service, the Protestant attitude and perception of it, and the possibility of online Services. First, it examines some changes in Christian Service in history and identifies the differences between them and the great change caused by the Coronavirus crisis. Going forward, it seeks to grasp the Korean Protestants' attitudes and perceptions towards non-face-to-face Sunday service by analyzing the results of the 2020 survey conducted by the Ministry Data Institute. Regarding the analysis of results, it discusses the possibility of online Services. Overall, the participation rate of Korean Protestants in non-face-to-face Services, including online Services, is high. The attitude of participation is active, and Sunday Services can be replaced by the online Services or family worship at home. However, the satisfaction level of non-face-to-face Services is low. There are positive and negative perceptions on it. These attitudes and perceptions demonstrate that online Service can persist in the post-Coronavirus or New Normal era even though Korean Protestant churches emphasize offline Services. And it looks possible to extend its role, function, and domain. Furthermore, as the Internet continues to expand its reach in human life and digital technology develops rapidly, online Services will be based on “individual religiosity” and “simultaneousness without spatial proximity,” thereby creating a new worship community.
