Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the transcultural stress factors experienced by Korean immigrantfathers as they go through childbirth with their wives in the United States socio-cultural context. Methods: A focusedethnographic approach was used for this study using semi-structured interviews. A purposive sample of sixteenKorean immigrant fathers who gave birth in the United States within last six months of the interviews participatedin this study. Data analysis was guided by Roper and Shapira’s framework for ethnographic data analysis methodwith the help of NVIvo software. Results: Five key themes were emerged as follows: Being a decision maker forthe wife and baby, undertaking non-traditional gender roles, lack of information about health care resources, dealingwith the wife’s depressive symptoms, and feeling socially isolated. Conclusion: This is the first cross-cultural studyto explore Korean fathers' out-of-culture childbirth experiences within a foreign socio-cultural context, focusing ontheir perceived stress factors. The findings would help health care providers in obstetrical settings better understandKorean immigrant fathers’ transcultural stress experiences. To provide more family-centered care and culturallysensitive perinatal to childbearing immigrant family, the fathers’ difficulties and challenges based on different culturalbelief system and gender roles should be also included as a part of perinatal education and care plan.
