A Long-term Care Facility's Geriatric Nursing Traits

Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to understand the uniqueness of a long-term care facility and to investigateits nursing practices for the elderly. Methods: Data were collected by close observations and the in-depth interviewsusing non-structured questionnaires with 7 nurses of a long-term care facility from October to December,2012. The key question was 'What are your experiences in the long-term care facility?'. Data were analyzed bythe qualitative content analysis. Results: There were structural and emotional circumstances, members, and relationshipsin the long-term care facility. The nursing traits of the long-term care facility could be characterized asthe following four domains: ‘The field of life; The understanding of place', ‘Subject of care; The understandingof the elderly', ‘Provider of care; The roles of nurses who performed wholistic nursing', ‘Surroundings of nursing;Expand the scope of nursing'. Conclusion: Based on these results, it is seen that a proper and realistic understandingabout the long-term care facility is needed, which is expected to be used as a basis for developing theintervention measures that are appropriate to unique traits of the long-term care facility nursing.
