초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological struggles faced by women from socioeconomically disadvantaged sectors throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Utilizing purposive sampling, eight participants were selected for focus group interviews in this photovoice investigation. Data collection was conducted in Seoul from September 4 to September 25, 2023, encompassing participants’ photographs, reflective narratives on their images, and group interview transcripts, which were subjected to thematic analysis. Results: Five themes were derived: A sense of helplessness stemming from a loss of control over one’s life, the altered perception of time during social distancing, the challenge of emotion regulation owing to a lack of communication, the substitution of social activities with maladaptive behaviors, and the heightened psychological vulnerability amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: This study underscores the necessity for crafting and implementing policies and support services specifically designed for the mental well-being of socioeconomically vulnerable women during infectious disease outbreaks like the COVID-19 pandemic. These strategies are directed towards mitigating mental health inequalities across COVID-19 and potential future pandemics
