고전언해는 오늘날의 번역에도 참고가 될 만한 점이 많다. 《사서언해》의 현토를 통해서는 한문에 없는 조사, 연접사에 대한 정확한 감각을 얻을 수 있을 터이니, 이를 바탕으로 직역에 관한 이론, 범례를 만들 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 《소학언해》와 《두시언해》는 직역의 원칙을 잘 지키면서 필요한 곳에는 의역을 가하고 적절한 어휘로 바꾸어 번역한 곳이 많으니, 현대문 감각에 맞게 어순을 조금 바꾸고 현대문에 매우 어색한 어휘만 적절히 고친다면 오늘날 한문고전 국역의 전범으로 삼아도 될 것이다.북한의 실록 번역은 대체로 주석을 거의 달지 않고 용어를 쉬운 현대어로 바꾸었기 때문에 일반 대중이 읽기에는 쉽겠지만 원의를 전달하는 데는 미흡하다. 실록이 일반 대중이 쉽게 읽는 책이 아니라 학자들의 연구 자료로 주로 활용된다는 점을 생각한다면 북한의 실록 번역은 결코 성공한 번역이라 할 수 없을 것이다.북한의 문집 번역은 모두 選譯인데 전고가 어렵거나 많은 작품들은 제외했다. 역시 인민대중이 읽을 책을 만든다는 목적에서 그렇게 한 것으로 보인다. 북한본은 민추본에 비해 현대어 감각을 고려해 쉽게 번역하였지만 쉬운 전고도 몰라서 주석을 달지 않았으며, 의미전달이 안 되고 모호하여 오역인지 아닌지 판단하기 어려운 곳도 많다. 어순을 바꾼 경우도 많은데 심하면 제이의 창작이 될 우려가 있다. 漢詩에서 제목은 시 解讀의 중요한 단서가 될 수 있고 독자에게 소중한 정보를 제공할 수 있는데 북한본 번역에서는 통상 제목을 현대어 감각에 맞춰 간략히 번역했고 잘못 번역한 곳들도 있다. 전고가 많지 않은 작품을 선별하여 번역했음에도 북한본 번역에는 오류가 매우 많다.민추본은 북한본보다는 월등히 나으나 수요자를 생각한 번역이라는 측면에서는 아직 미흡한 점이 없다고 할 수 없다.교감, 표점 및 한문 문리에 맞게 직역하는 것은 고전국역에 있어 기초공사와도 같다. 기초 과정을 착실히 거치지 않은 채 무턱대고 대중화란 큰 목표만 지향하는 번역은 오히려 대중에게서 멀어지는 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 한문고전의 대중화는 이 시대의 가장 크고 뚜렷한 명분이지만, 북한의 번역에서 보았듯이 자칫하면 가장 맹목적인 목표가 될 수도 있다. 따라서 기관, 연구소 등 단체가 하는 고전국역은 당장은 대중화에 미흡할지라도, 기본에 충실한 번역을 해야 한다. 그래야 功이 쌓여 점차 좋은 번역으로 나아갈 수 있고, 그 과정을 통하여 수준 높은 국역자, 내지 한학자를 양성할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Korean translation of Chinese classics is still useful. As we can acquire exact meaning of propositions and affixes that do not exist in Korean literature of Chinese classics through showing the Chinese characters in Korean of 《Saseounhae》, we are able to make a theory and paradigm on literal translation. For 《Sohakunhae》 and 《Sasiunhae》, the translation observes the principle of literal translation. As where translation is necessary is translated and some words are changed, if word orders are a little bit modified and awkward words are replaced properly according to modern sense, they can be a model of Korean translation of Chinese classics. For the translation of authentic record developed by North Korea, as there are few comments and words are replaced by easy modern words, it is easy for the public to understand them, but it is not enough to deliver the original meaning. In consideration that the authentic record is mainly used as data for research, not a book for the public, it seems that the translation by North Korea is not successful. All the translation by North Korea is selective except the classics whose authentic precedents are difficult and large. It indicates that the translation was designed for the public. The classics translation by North Korea is easy in consideration of the modern sense, but no comment is provided even for easy authentic precedents, and there are many parts whose meaning is difficult to understood as it is ambiguous. Many changes in word orders occur, which may cause the translation to be understood as a new creation. Though classical books with less authentic precedents were selected and translated, the translation by North Korea has lots of errors, which means that the popularization of the Korean classics is very difficult. The translation by the Institutes for the Translation of Korean Classics has less errors than that by North Korea, but it can not be said that it has no defects in an aspect that it is designed for readers. Literal translation that contains the mutual response, points and contexts is like a base of whole construction. The translation which targets only a comprehensive goal of popularization without a basic process may cause the public turn away from the classics. Though the popularization of Korean classics is the largest and most distinctive obligation of this era, it may be a blind target. Therefore, the translation of Korean classics by research institutes and organizations appears to be poor now, but translation with a firm base should be pursued. If so, the results will get better, and popularization will be possible. Based on the firm base, the classics to be translated should be selected and designed for the public to read them easily. Meanwhile, it is important to nurture qualified translators and scholars of Korean classics through Korean translation, which should be necessarily considered in the process of Korean translation.
