『日省錄』 번역 현황과 과제 -正祖代 완역 시점을 중심으로-

本考는 『일성록』 번역이 시작되고 正祖代 完譯을 마친 2015년 시점에서 『일성록』 의 사료적 가치와, 그동안 진행된 『일성록』 正祖代 번역의 현황과 전개과정을 자세히 기술한 다음 남아 있는 純祖, 憲宗, 哲宗, 高宗, 純宗 왕대의 번역을 더욱 효과적이고 발전적으로 수행하기 위한 방법과 향후 과제를 제시하였다. 『조선왕조실록』과 『승정원일기』 번역 경험이 축적되어 있는 상황에서 시작된 『일성록』 번역은 원문의 난이도와 체제, 제도사, 용어 등등 이전 번역에서 경험하지 못한 난관을 봉착하였다. 이에 『일성록』 특징에 맞는 「번역지침」, 「표준번역」, 「용어해설집」 등을 작성하여, 다수의 역자가 참여하는 번역의 통일성 유지와 함께 영, 정조대에 쏟아져 나오는 역사어휘, 또는 용어를 적극적으로 연구하는 작업을 꾸준히 병행하였다. 한편으로 번역 단계부터 원고를 안정적으로 생산하고 품질을 효율적으로 관리하기 위해 교육과 자문을 실시하여 번역품질의 제고는 물론 역자의 번역 역량을 키우는 데 노력하였다. 제출된 원고에 대해서는 공정하고 정확한 평가가 되도록 평가시스템의 변천을 겪었고 이를 통해 철저한 피드백 효과와 더불어 규정 수준 이상의 번역 품질을 유지하게 되었다. 18년간 진행된 『일성록』 번역에는 연인원 260명이 참여하였다. 앞으로 남은 왕대의 번역 사업을 수행하기 위해서는 역사문헌 번역 전문역자 양성이 시급하며 이들에 대한 처우개선이 이루어져야 만이 젊고 우수한 번역인력이 유입될 것이다. 『일성록』 정조대 完譯은, 정조시대의 역사를 접근하기 쉽게 만든데 의의가 있다. 연구자들은 『일성록』에만 실린 자료를 통해 지방의 실정, 국가 안위에 관계되는 형사 사건, 외국 사정, 민의의 동향 등을 활발하게 연구하게 될 것이고, 일반 대중은 다양한 문화콘텐츠 소재를 발굴하여 역사 문화 고전의 대중화에 일조를 할 것으로 보인다.
Abstract
The Ilseongrok Translation Project provides efficient ways of translating the histories of King Soenjoe, King Hunjong, King Cheoljong, King Gojong, and King Soonjong reigns. These works are our future assignments. The Ilseongrok translation team has faced many unexpected roadblocks because of the difficulty of the original document, the names of institutions, and terms that we had not seen before. The gaining of knowledge happened prior acquired through translating The Veritable Record of the Choseon Dynasty and The Diaries of the Royal Secretariats was not enough for the task of translating the Ilseongrok. In order to overcome these hurdles, the authors have written many editorial guidelines such as a style sheet, a sample translation, and FAQs to maintain the consistency of the translation among the many participants who were also actively engaged in research on the historical vocabulary used during the era of King Jeongjo. From the beginning we have provided continuous training to translators and sought outside advice to produce a consistent series of manuscripts and maintain quality. We have also made a conscious effort to increase the capability of our translators. We have incessantly improved our internal evaluation system for the sake of fair and exact evaluations of the submitted manuscripts; this allows us to give more effective feedback and also maintain the quality of translation so that it is higher than the prescribed level. Over the last 18 years, about 260 people have participated in the Ilseongrok translation project. A pool of specialists in the translation of historical documents is needed urgently if a translation is to be published of the remaining Choseon kings. We believe that young, talented translators will enthusiastically participate only when better treatment and compensation are offered to them. We are proud that the completed translation of Ilseongrok has made the history of the Joengjo reign more accessible to people. Researchers will continue working on the local affairs, criminal cases involving national security, foreign affairs and public opinion of that era; in return, the public will discover new cultural content and will popularize historical and cultural classics.
