Urban Landscape in Southeast Asia : Towards a New Epistemology of Asian City and Architecture

Abstract
The rationale of this article lies on the recognition of the research propensities towards Northeast Asian countries, particularly Japan and China, among urban and architectural academicians, and the resulting crippled understanding on Southeast Asian urban landscape including architecture. To overcome this research propensity, this article attempts to provoke the necessity of interdisciplinary as well as systems approach in studying Southeast Asian cities and architectures. For the purpose, this article, viewing architecture as a subsystem of the whole urban environment(system), is i) to discuss, under the historical, economic, spatial and globalization perspective, varieties and complexities observed in Southeast Asian urban landscape in an interdisciplinary way, ii) to raise the issues of plurality and identity in Southeast Asian architecture based upon the explanation of some dominant building types, and iii) to underscore the necessity of ‘Southeast Asian Approach' towards a new epistemology of Asian architecture.
