Abstract
In the globalizing society, it is getting more and more important to reinforce civil society’s role. Beyond national identity, people who have same interests cooperate and collaborate each other to achieve their goals. IT technology propels this situation. It seems that East-Asia countries have low institutional collaboration level in solving national problems. So, it needs to establish national cooperative relations between nations by reinforcing civil society’s role and efforts. This study researches Korean civil society’s changes and developments by examining coping strategies about history textbook problems between Korea and Japan which occur repeatedly and continuously. To achieve this goal, firstly, I research civil society’s role to solve conflicts between two nations. Then, I analyze how Korean civil societies have counteracted history textbook problems between Korea and Japan during 6 crises. Moreover, I closely examine the 9 years coping strategies of “Asia Peace & History Education Network,”representative civil society, which was established in 2001. By doing this work,I study Korean civil society’s changes and developments and implication. Korean civil society is achieving a high level of political, economic, social growth after 1987 democratization. In addition, it has more vigorous activities to solve international problems. Thus, I catch the point that Korean civil society is developing rationally, systematically and collectively. Needless to say, history education is important. Future-oriented behaviors and thoughts come from right understanding about the past. So, we need to consider seriously history textbook problems because it affects directly and indirectly to people’s mind. Moreover, we need to continue our governmental, academic, civilian activities which are based with mutual understanding and trust. In Korea-Japan relations, civil societies made a remarkable growth. However, they sometimes made emotional, unprofessional, and transient decisions and coping strategies, especially in past affairs. Therefore, we have to make an effort to establish a long-term policy and more specific strategies. Having said that each country attempted to put his own voice in its place, It is necessary to find a common place to put a single voice between Japan and Korea in general.
