Abstract

This study analyzes long-term trends in protests in Hong Kong from a world-systems perspective. From the mid-nineteenth century to the present, Hong Kong’s economic, social, political, and cultural systems have been formed through inextricable links with external forces like British power, Western liberal democratic ideology, China’s intervention policies, and Anglo-American capitalist logics. Hong Kong protests are no exception. The protests in Hong Kong that began in the late nineteenth century have developed under the direct or indirect influences of Western and Chinese material and ideological conditions; however, long-term protests in Hong Kong have not attracted much attention from the world-systems researchers. To connect Hong Kong’s protests to the world-systems perspectives, I rearrange the long-term historical trajectory and socio-economic background of Hong Kong protests. In doing so, this article argues that the process and consequences of Hong Kong protests can be reinterpreted within the framework of transnational connectivity.
