Abstract

The study investigates how Ayana Moon Jihye, a Korean Muslim influencer popular among Southeast Asian Muslims, constructs a hybrid femininity and influences her followers. It also examines the effects of Hallyu—specifically, Korean identity and K-beauty—on the hybridization of Southeast Asian Muslim femininity. The study employs online ethnographic analysis and content analysis of Moon's popular Instagram posts, followers' comments, and advertisements featuring her. The findings reveal that while the pursuit of beauty prominently features in Moon's posts, the desire to maintain a Muslim identity remains strong, as evidenced by high engagement with posts related to religious events or issues. She maintains a devout Muslim image on social media, while embracing aesthetic ideals, generally receiving positive responses. Additionally, posts highlighting her role as a family member and depicting the daily life of a large family attract high engagement from followers, whereas content about her graduate school life is more popular than her commercial activities. This indicates a preference for portrayals of "women who care for their families" and "well-educated women." Furthermore, Moon's emphasis on Korean identity and K-beauty, though novel to some, resonates with Southeast Asian Muslim women, who view her as a role model presenting an alternative that blends Western, Asian, and Muslim beauty ideals. The study aims to show the dynamics of femininity formation and identity expression in the evolving Southeast Asian Muslim society through Moon's case, and highlights the need for diverse case studies in future research.
