Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine and synthesize relationships between loneliness and eating problems (eating disorders, bulimia nervosa, and emotional eating) by conducting a meta-analytic review using CMA program. To calculate effect sizes for the relationship between loneliness and eating problems, we systemtically reviewed papers published in, academic journals, and dissertations written in both Korean and English, spanning from 2002 to 2022. A total of 11 studies were selected, from which we calculated 31 effect sizes. As a result of the meta-analysis, first, the relationship between loneliness and eating disorders was significant and showed small effect size. Second, the relationship between loneliness and bulimia nervosa showed a significantly small effect size. Third, in contrast, the relationship loneliness and emotional eating was not statistically significant. Finally, implications, limitations, and suggestions for future studies were discussed.
