Abstract

The foundation of Eastern painting lies in Eastern philosophy, and Daoist thought is one of the key sources of Chinese oil painting. This paper takes the idea of “Dao as One” as its central concept. First, it explains its philosophical meaning: “maintaining oneness to reach spiritual clarity,” “uniting as one so that all things and the self are connected,” and “understanding oneness to respond to changes.” It then discusses the relationship between “Dao as One” and Chinese oil painting from three aspects: from “maintaining oneness” to the creator’s state of calm emptiness; from “uniting as one” to the creator’s capacity for empathy or identification; and from “understanding oneness” to the technique of following no fixed method. The conclusion points out that “Dao as One” serves as a fundamental mode of thinking in Chinese oil painting. By following the principles of “maintaining oneness, uniting as one, and understanding oneness,” artists can reach a level of “spiritual clarity, unity with all things, and responsiveness to change,” which can be expressed in painting through the states of calm emptiness, empathy, and method without fixed form. The artistic ideas within Chinese philosophy reveal many aesthetic insights and principles of artistic creation. The development of Chinese oil painting must draw on the cultural and spiritual resources of Chinese tradition; only in this way can it form a distinctive style and gain a firm place in the global art field.
